Help Cut Down on Waste - Home Made Cleaning Supplies

Powdered Laundry Soap

1 bar Castile soap, grated
2 cups Borax
2 cups washing soda
1 cup baking soda
Combine all of the ingredients and store in a covered jar. Use ¼ cup per load.

Lavender Laundry Softener
1 cup dried lavender buds
1 quart white vinegar
2-4 drops lavender essential oil
Combine the mixture and let it sit for a week.

All-purpose cleaner
1 tbsp white vinegar
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp Castile soap
1 tbsp Borax
Combine all the ingredients and add to a spray bottle.

Tub Scrub
1 cup baking soda
¼ cup salt
10 drops citrus essential oil
5 drops tea tree essential oil
Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight tub.

Carpet Deodorizer
1 cup Borax
1 cup baking soda
10 drops essential oils

Combine and store in an airtight tub.

Oven Cleaner
1 small box baking soda
1 cup liquid Castile Soap

Combine ingredients and mix until smooth. Apply to a cloth and wipe clean.

Dusting Spray
1 cup distilled water
3 drops essential oils
Combine in a spray bottle and use with a cotton cloth.

Citrus Degreaser
½ cup lemon juice
¼ cup baking soda
5 to 10 drops citrus essential oils
Combine to make a paste and use a damp cloth to wipe off.

This song never gets old. “Meg White” opens with spaghetti western whistles and strums before Ray kicks up some gossip in the grain by inviting Ms. White on long bike rides, romancing her with compliments (“Meg White, such a pretty sight”), and finding a way to hit on her rather diplomatically. (“Baby you’re the bomb. Oh Jack is great, don’t get me wrong. But this is your song.”) All of this is real, by the way. Loves it!!!

An Apple a Day Really Keeps the Doctor away...NO REALLY

Why is it that we never hear an orange or a banana a day keeps the doctor away? Why is a freakin' APPLE so special? And I'm not taking Mac Apples. Here are some great reasons why you should eat your apples...

1-Apple contains Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps greatly your immune system. A lot of people who lack Vitamin C in their diet have poor healing, bruise easily and have bleeding gums.

2-Prevent Heart Diseases. The reason it can prevent both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease is because apples are rich in flavonoid. Flavonoids are also known for their antioxidant effects.

3-Low in calories. A regular size apple has between 70-100 calories. Eating an apple when craving for candy or chocolate can make the desire disappear since apple in itself contains sugar, but gives you only ¼ of the calories.

4-Prevent Cancers. Notice the plural. We all know that cancer comes in several forms and in different places. Apples target multiple cancers such as colon cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer in women.

5-Apples contain phenols, which have a double effect on cholesterol. It reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. They prevent LDL cholesterol from turning into oxidized LDL, a very dangerous form of bad cholesterol which can be deadly.

6-Prevent tooth decay. Tooth decay is an infection that seriously damages the structure of your teeth, which is caused primarily because of bacteria. The juice of the apples has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria. So there you have it, an apple a day also keeps the dentist away!

7-Protects your brain from brain disease. This is something many people don’t know, and when you consider that your brain makes the person you are, it gives a whole new perspective. Apple has substances called phytonutrients, and these phytonutrients prevents neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsonism.

8-Healthier Lungs. A research at the University of Nottingham Research shows that people who eat 5 apples or more per week has lower respiratory problems, including asthma.

9-They taste great! And not only that, they also come in many flavors and colors. Not in a mood for a green apple? Why not get a red one, or a macintosh! Their taste can vary greatly, but still give you all the apple benefits. Variety is an important element to maintaining your health.

Sushi (すし、寿司, 鮨, 鮓, 寿斗, 寿し, 壽司^?) is a Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegared rice (shari) combined with other ingredients (neta). Neta and forms of sushi presentation vary, but the ingredient which all sushi have in common is shari. The most common neta is seafood.

Sushi recipe
Makes 4 servings

Ingredients
sushi rice
3 cups japanese-style cooked rice
3/4 cup rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
roasted nori

Preparation
1. Cook rice according to package instructions.
2. Mix vinegar, sugar and salt.
3. Cut vinegar mixture into cooked rice until well combined.
4. To roll sushi you can use a bamboo sushi mat, or just use a cleantowel instead, or you can even forego the roller and just carefully roll using your hands.
5. Place nori sheet on roller and spread a thin layer of the sushi rice over the nori.
6. Place your filling in a center line on the nori sheet.
7. Begin rolling by carefully folding over the top edge and starting the roll.
8. Continue to roll, keeping the roll as tight as possible.
9. Take a sharp knife and slice the roll into 1- 1 1/2 inch pieces.

Possible Sushi Filling Combinations: avocado, cucumber, scallops, omelet, raw tuna, raw salmon, crab meat, squid, salmon egg, lettuce, and more….

Dead Weather Ain't NO Side Project

Its members' other endeavors are beckoning, but the Dead Weather is not over -- at least as far as bassist "Little" Jack Lawrence is concerned.

"We all go back to our other projects after this tour, but there's no doubt in my mind we'll be doing more stuff," Lawrence tells Billboard.com. He, in fact, rejoins the Greenhornes for "Four Stars," the trio's first release in five years and first full-length album in eight.

Guitarist Dean Fertita leaves the Dead Weather tour "a few hours after" it finishes on Aug. 3 in Brooklyn to return to Queens of the Stone Age, while singer Alison Mosshart is recording a new album with the Kills. Jack White, meanwhile, is rumored to be jump-starting the White Stripes but is also busy with his Third Man label -- which will release the Greenhornes album on vinyl -- and studio.

Nevertheless, Lawrence predicts that by the end of the year, the band "will either be recording or doing some more shows. I don't think we can stop; even if someone was too busy, nothing seems like it's going to be getting in the way of this," he says. "Our other bands are still alive, obviously, but this one is right up there. It doesn't feel like a side project or anything to us. It feels like a real band. And I think it's just getting better the more we get to play."

The Dead Weather began working on new material immediately after the release of 2009's "Horehound," which gave the group a head start on this year's "Sea of Cowards." Lawrence says the group has "a couple things that we've been messing around with," but not nearly to the same degree. He's not concerned about the quartet coming up with the goods when it comes together, however.

"It just flows so naturally with us in the studio," he explains. "A lot of it has to do with us just knowing how to be in a band. The ego's gone and we all know how to work together and function. There's never been a time in the studio when anyone's argued or butted heads over something. We all sit in a room and write together. Everything is pretty smooth operating. We haven't planned on anything. It just all comes together. We don't sit around and discuss it or talk about the next move we need to make. All of it just happens, which is refreshing. It's the way you always want bands to work."

Lawrence says there's no talk yet of resurrecting the Raconteurs -- which he and White are also part of -- but he's excited to return to the Greenhornes, which has been on a five-year hiatus.

"Those guys are my brothers," he says of guitarist Craig Fox and drummer Patrick Keeler. "It's nice to come back to that first 'home' that you've had after all these years. We practiced last month at Patrick's place and it was...just really specially. I had a pretty big smile on my face the whole time we were playing."

I have shut down when it comes to music and haven't been in tune lately.

I no longer a part of an art scene. I have been disconnected since moving to Atlanta and don't know where to start.

I no longer have anyone to sip wine with or listen to Jazz with. I miss this so much...it's a great way to unwind and get ready for the work week.

I no longer travel to wonderful places just off the wall places for work. Boo. I have no desire to explore.

What is Facebook Stalking??

Facebook Stalking, like regular stalking, allows the stalker to secretly gather information about the person they are interested in; the stalkee if you will. Unlike regular stalking, Facebook Stalking is less likely to have an illegal component and is generally accepted by it's voyeuristic victims. The argument being, that if you didn't want others to know about your life, you wouldn't post it all over the internet.

I have recently become victim of stalking. My ex husband has been stalking me over the last 2 years and recently admitted he has been doing so in court.

So, how does this happen? Who has time to do this? Why would someone do this? In my case, this person was unemployed and had nothing better to do, but to stalk me.

Ready or not here comes Bad Weather (new Jack Black project)

Jack White has a new band, it’s called The Bad Weather and it consists of Alison Mosshart (The Kills) on vocals, Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs) on bass, Dean Fertita (Queens Of The Stone Age) and Jack White on drums. I must say, Jack is a superb drummer (surprise, surprise, he is great at pretty much everything!) and the new stuff is sounded really interesting. There are two singles available to download from itunes, a track called Hang You From The Heaven, which I think sounds like a perfect mix between early Kills and The White Stripes Elephant album. A cover of Are Friends Electric is the other single, it doesn’t sway too far away from the original, it just sounds more fresh and heavier. If these tracks are anything to go by, I can’t wait to hear the album. This isn’t the first time Jack’s strayed away from meg, he has had success with his other band The Raconteurs and also collaborated with Alicia Keys on the most recent James Bond soundtrack. I personally thought the song was awful, but I could clearly hear how talented Jack was on the drums so I’m really glad he’s got together with some other great musicians and decided to put that drumming talent into a new project. If you’re not familiar with any of the other members of The Bad Weather, I strongly recommend you have a listen to The Kills, The Raconteurs and Queens Of The Stone Age, they are all excellent bands. The Bad Weather’s debut album is expected sometime in June. You can have a listen to both the tracks on youtube, here’s the links.... enjoy!

I have not thought about the poet Sylvia Plath for years...Just read that her son, Nicholas Hughes has also taken his own life. He had battling depression for some time.

Forty six years after his mother, iconic poet Sylvia Plath, committed suicide by gassing herself, her son, Nicholas Hughes has also taken his own life. After a battle with depression, reports The Times Online, Hughes, 47, who had most recently worked as a professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, hanged himself in his Alaskan home. “His lifelong fascination with fish and fishing was a strong and shared bond with our father (many of whose poems were about the natural world)," said his sister, Freida Hughes in a statement. "He was a loving brother, a loyal friend to those who knew him and, despite the vagaries that life threw at him, he maintained an almost childlike innocence and enthusiasm for the next project or plan.”

Tulips by Sylvia Plath

The tulips are too excitable, it is winter here.
Look how white everything is, how quiet, how snowed-in
I am learning peacefulness, lying by myself quietly
As the light lies on these white walls, this bed, these hands.
I am nobody; I have nothing to do with explosions.
I have given my name and my day-clothes up to the nurses
And my history to the anaesthetist and my body to surgeons.

They have propped my head between the pillow and the sheet-cuff
Like an eye between two white lids that will not shut.
Stupid pupil, it has to take everything in.
The nurses pass and pass, they are no trouble,

The water I taste is warm and salt, like the sea,

And since releasing the crown jewel of his canon, 2006's "Post-War," he's been quite the man about town. Teaming up with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him, there was last year's winning "Volume One."

And thus we have "Hold Time," presumably a catchier distillation of the more apt "Holding Pattern Time." It's not a bad record, but if you're going to wait three years between albums, why in God's name would you include a cover of "Rave On"? That kind of thinking'll get you on the fast track to the cutout bin ... or a landfill. And what's the deal with the title track's easy-listening dry-heave?

There are great songs here ("Jailbird," "Shangri-La," the Zooey-backed slouch-rock of "Never Had Nobody Like You"), and some artful touches that threaten to point toward something conceptually forward-thinking (the subway-aping, galloping drum swell on "Stars Of Leo" is downright exhilarating), but most of M.'s best ideas seem to have been used up on everyone else's records. Most of all, there's simply nothing here that leaps out in full-blown Technicolor like a "Chinese Translation." Just a bunch of fine songs, three long years in the making. Time to get alone and reconfigure, Mr. Indie Go---To Guy.

I highly recommend this album.

Pandora.com, the online music service that has only experimented with audio ads in the past, is incorporating regular commercial breaks into its service.

15-second ads will air just once every two hours, says Tim Westergren, Pandora founder (via MediaBuyerPlanner and AdWeek). The ads are reinforced with graphical images within the Pandora web interface.

Initial advertisers include American Idol, Bose and McDonald’s.

To peddle ad space, Pandora hired two sales executives from the traditional radio world, according to ClickZ.

Pandora experimented with ads in early 2007, with a 9-second McDonald’s ad between songs when a user changed stations; each user heard the ad once per day. But when the company asked for a reaction, most reported being upset with the addition of ads, so Pandora ceased running them, writes CNET.

Users disgruntled about audio ads this time around can register for premium membership — $36 per year. Premium members suffer no ad messages.

Pandora hosts 21 million registered users and 2 million regular users per day. Advertising in music streams, on its website and via the iPhone are its main source of income.

So what is Boho Chic??

Message from the man...

I’m not sure that there’s any other kind, but the songs I write are love songs. Some are literal, about specific events, people and relationships in my life; a form of therapy, self-help for the flowers and the shit along the road of life. Others come from a place far more mysterious. Either way, I’m in it to capture the feeling, the truth of an emotion, changing only names and events to protect the innocent. At the moment, my favorite songs on the album are “Diamonds & Gold”, “Spinning Compass” and “Restless.” Some came out of the blue, others took some sweat but if the feeling’s there, then you’ve got something and it don’t make a damn difference how it happened. I hope that you feel it. This collection of songs represents our most comfortable, cohesive and soul-shaking music to date. It has been a great pleasure for me working with Sam, Malachi and Paul on this. And after all the good, bad and not so pretty all I can say is—please enjoy. Love and Peace, Langhorne

Review of the band She & Him
"She" is Zooey Deschanel (vocals, piano, banjo), Indie movie-star. "Him" is M. Ward guitar, production), the rootsy guitarist. The band's first album Volume One was released on Merge Records in March, 2008. I am just now hearing about this…I need to get back in touch with “The Music”.

Anywhoo…Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward first met on the set of the film The Go-Getter, in which the actress had a starring role. The director of the film, Martin Hynes, introduced the two and asked them to sing a duet together to be played at the end credits of the film. They decided to perform a Richard and Linda Thompson song entitled "When I Get to the Border". The two bonded over their shared interest in certain songs and artists. M. Ward, having heard Deschanel sing previously in the film Elf, was surprised that she wrote songs herself and had many home demos. He asked her to send them to him. Deschanel was shy about music, but sent them to him anyway. M. Ward called her a short time later, and told her that he would like to record her songs properly, and their band She & Him was formed.

The two originally worked together via e-mail, with M. Ward in his Portland, Oregon studio and Deschanel in her Los Angeles, California home. Ward would spend time "tinkering" with the music after Deschanel sent it to him, but Zooey eventually had to go to his studio to put the finishing touches on their album. They recorded in Portland in December 2006 and February-March 2007. It took them three recording sessions to complete the album. They also recorded in Mike Coykendall's and Adam Selzer's studios, and had a mixing session with Mike Mogis in his Omaha, Nebraska studio in either April or May 2007.

They took a break after that, as M. Ward was on tour and Zooey Deschanel was filming a movie. Their album was released on March 18, 2008. Their first public appearance as a band, however, was a year and two months earlier at the Sundance screening of The Go-Getter. They performed sporadically at other events and plan to go on tour this summer. The duo also plan to create a second album, entitled Volume Two.

So back to Volume One…Together they pose as a great lost Seventies AM-gold couple. Their acoustic vibe conjures up a time-travel fantasy of key parties, hot tubs and Chablis-crazed groping behind the spider plants. If this is your kind of thing, you will love this record, because Zooey and M. Ward definitely know their mellow. Zooey's vocals are so Carly Simon and Joan Baez that is hurts, especially on country-flavored tunes like "Got Me" and "Take It Back." Lazy souls will compare her to Dusty Springfield, but the more accurate touchstone is soft-rock goddess Rita Coolidge. "Change Is Hard" is a loving homage to Ronstadt's "Different Drum" — M. Ward even plays the harpsichord solo on steel guitar. All the songs are simple, which was a smart move

I must admit that the duo don't do so well with covers. Smokey Robinson is over their heads, judging from the flubbed chords and notes in "You Really Got a Hold on Me." And they do the Beatles' "I Should Have Known Better" as giggly camp. Maybe that is what they were going for…hmmm?

I must admit, it's more fun to hear them do their own laid-back thing on "This Is Not a Test," with its EST lyrics and L.A. malaise. Zooey doesn't go for the sassy comic edge she brings to her movies. In these songs, she's just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her. And if M. Ward could resist, he must have a heart of stone, or maybe just a switchblade-packing girlfriend. HA!!!

China's first carbon-neutral hotel

"In China, it's always about big, think bigger, bigger is better," says Jules Kwan. A philosophy he totally ignored when he built a boutique hotel in the heart of urban Shanghai.

URBN Hotels Shanghai makes its home (randomly enough) in what used to be China's biggest prosthetics factory. Since they didn't have to build from scratch, Jules and his team were able to construct the hotel within about four or five months using plenty of recycled materials – from old floorboards to bricks from houses that had been knocked down for the development of new high rise buildings. Getting addicted to a green building process, they took the URBN concept much further to claim the title of China's first carbon-neutral hotel.

Beyond low VOC paints, energy-saving lighting and AC systems, carbon offsets of guests' travel and employee commuting, Jules talks about some of the other features that make them different: "Cultural services like Chinese cooking classes, language classes, architectural tours, acupuncture, Tai Chi and yoga classes... we offer all kinds of stuff that you don’t usually get in a normal hotel."

When I asked him if people actually take advantage of those things (they sound good on paper, but...), he says that many guests have stayed there simply because they've found out about those services and he even admits to being quite surprised that so many folks were interested in participating.

"The whole point of us doing this was that we would be at the forefront of all the hotels and the accommodation industry in China and everyone would hopefully follow us – and maybe in Asia as well," Jules says. "We want to be the leading boutique hotel and resort company in China."

Now that the hotel is up and running, Jules is focusing on expanding the brand. "The concept for URBN Hotels is meant to be very much a healthy lifestyle product," he explains. "We would like the next hotel to be slightly larger and have components of environmental, pro-green companies, like maybe a retail section with home-grown organic companies. We definitely want to make that part of the ethos of the brand."

And this is one brand that has some pretty aggressive plans – Jules and his partner are slated to open up 20 more hotels throughout China within the next three years. Who knows, maybe they'll extend this concept westward....

I ran across this blog archive entry today and thought I would give an update. I did not find love, it found me. In fact, love hit me like a ton of bricks. Funny how that happens when you are not expecting it. :)

I have had two wonderful relationships and ONE incredible relationship in my life time.

The first was glamorous in every way. It was full of adventure, new experiences, romance, passion, pleasure. Up until that point I did not know that much passion existed between two people. It was what I needed at the time. We ended it how it began with no regrets. Good times indeed.

The second was spiritual on many levels. Very uplifting. I exposed my all layers. I found both balance and grounding. I was in love and felt loved without saying it. It was non-committal but I was totally committed. It was the easy in every way. My world came crashing down when he left town, but it was not in me to hold him back from his dream. It took me several years to shake that one off.

All my past and the past mistakes brought me here...

The third is a roller coaster. This one is full of life and love. We have experienced all levels of commitment. It's a true partnership filled with passion, pleasure, and pain. I have never worked so hard in my life for someone or something... it's totally worth it. We laugh, we cry, we struggle, we fight, we make-up and we are a team. I've felt every level of emotion one could. We're truly connected... It's a level I thought I would never experience in my life time.

We all desire to be loved & feel love.

Rachael Yamagata new album is fabulous. Here are my thoughts after listening to it all morning...

The record encapsulating the sadness, pain and inevitable questioning of a breakup in several of its songs. It even provides us with a hidden gem, "Elephants" debuts with the title track, full of whispered words, dainty piano and moments of soaring orchestral strings. "What If I Leave," written more than a decade ago, feels like an auditory viewing window into the mind of a left lover grasping to understand, with propositions and what ifs swimming around in a lukewarm bath of soft melody.

Rachael has outdone herself with this one. "Elephants" is dark and vulnerable, it continues on this emotional trajectory as Rachael seems to work through the first few stages of grief (the misery, the anger, the loneliness). With the song "Sunday Afternoon," the album takes a momentary upswing on with her still reflective vocals gaining strength. "I won't live for you or die for you or do anything anymore for you". Such a great line. The song also has a wailing electric guitar the perfect accompaniment at points, juxtaposed with more moody strings. Gosh, ya gotta love those moody strings. There is a bit of chatter before "Duet". This song brought tears to my eyes. It's about begging a lover to come back. "If only you would come back home." "Oh Lover, hold on 'till i come back again for these arms are growin' tired, and my tales are wearing thin."

The tune "Teeth Sinking Into Heart," kicks off with the furious "Side dish Friend," a short but potent burst of guitar-driven energy in which Rachael lays down the rules for a part-time lover, while "Faster" tells the ex to get lost rock-star style: "I'm going faster you're going backwards you're going to miss me when I'm gone." The last fee songs that the delicate songstress finds her feet again, her sad croon transforming into a sturdy--albeit still soft--voice full of clarity, personal strength and ownership. "Don't," the roller-coaster album's final track, may still sound oh-woe-is-me with the "Twin Peaks"-esque bassy notes and Rachael’s slow drawl, but listen to the lyrics and you'll realize this woman in transition will do just fine on her own, thank you very much.

Went to Grimey's for lunch to see Langhorne Slim play. Wow, what a way to spend lunch time. Mike served the crowd pizza and sodas.

He played Sweet Olive Tree, Colette, Restless, Diamonds and Gold, Honey Pie and Mix between I Will and I love you, but good bye.

He sounded amazing.

Sarah Palin Gives Democrats Her Much-Awaited First Stumble

ABC (Nightline) aired an extended portion of Charles Gibson's interview with Sarah Palin. In one segment (video below the jump), Gibson asks the Republican vice-presidential nominee whether she agrees with the Bush Doctrine. Palin, who seems unfamiliar with the phrase, sighs and purses her lips almost sadly for Gibson. Here's the exchange:

GIBSON: "Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?"
PALIN: "In what respect, Charlie?
GIBSON: "What do you attribute it to be?"
PALIN: "His world view?"
GIBSON: "No, the Bush Doctrine, enunciated in September 2002, before the Iraq war."
PALIN: "I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism…"

Palin went on to mention mistakes Bush had made in the execution of the Iraq war, and to talk about change in Washington, getting back on more familiar territory. When Gibson explained that the Bush Doctrine was a policy of military preemption, Palin expressed support for it.

Democrats will likely try to spin her lack of knowledge about the Bush Doctrine as a sign of her lack of foreign-policy experience and unpreparedness to make important military decisions. Yeah!! I would think so.

The Washington Post printed another perceived gaffe on the front page. Reporter Anne Kornblut quoted Palin from a speech she gave to her son's Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers, in which she seemed to link the Iraqi government to Al Qaeda's attacks on September 11. She labeled the troops' mission as one of "[defending] the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans." "America can never go back to that false sense of security that came before September 11, 2001," she added. Even President Bush by now has publicly dropped the theory that Iraq had anything to do with the World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Some argue that this is an unfair interpretation of Palin's quotes, but expect the Obama campaign to seize on this alleged blunder as well. Now the challenge for them in the coming days, as Palin has more off-the-cuff speaking opportunities, will be to take advantage of other perceived slip-ups while at the same time not seeming to run against her, instead of McCain.

Broken relationships + bitterness = good music

Rachael Yamagata has certainly endured enough heartbreak in the last four years to attest. The piano songbird's latest two-part album, Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart out October 14 on Warner Bros, is a glorious cathartic dump of botched relationships and the painful aftermath. And Yamagata holds nothing back in her candid delivery, her smoky Joplin-esque growl hushed by her delicate and fragile voice.

"Elephants" likens a failed relationship to wild animals: elephants, tigers, and hawks. This concept could very easily straddle the cheesy line, but Yamagata's bare-bones honesty and quiet vulnerability masks any apprehension. As the song gracefully builds over piano flourishes and sparsely added strings and percussion, you find yourself becoming strangely sad. The genuinely eerie out-of-a-diary lyric "you are forcing me to remember/when all I want is to just forget" makes you wonder, what the heck did this guy do? But then again, it sure makes for some beautiful music.

Kazu “Kaz” Hishida is building his restaurant/bar universe from the underground up. On Saturday, he plans to launch The Underworld bar in the basement of the building at 2817 West End Ave. Later this fall, he will debut Globe Bar International on the building's main floor.

After four years at Kazu, an Asian fusion restaurant in Cummins Station started by his father Kazuhira Hishida, Kaz is flying solo in the Vanderbilt corridor. Since closing Kazu this year, his dad has joined the kitchen team at Fuse, the über-glam Vegas-style club at Gaylord Opryland Resort.

Located in the basement of the stately building that once housed The Hanger boutique, The Underworld will take its design cues from the playfully dark drawings of author Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, and will offer a light bar menu of sandwiches, paninis, pizzas and salads. (Hishida expects to have a beer license by the weekend, but The Underworld will not have a liquor permit by Saturday's soft opening.)

When it debuts in late September or October, Globe will offer an international menu with a more refined lounge atmosphere than the “glorified dive bar” downstairs, Hishida said.

Both The Underworld and Globe will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week and will be open to guests 21-and-older in the evenings.

In 2006 they released an acoustic EP called “The Gleam” It refined their scattershot approach by covering only one corner of the Avetts' sound, dispensing six pensively down-tempo songs performed with the same arsenal of instruments-- guitars, banjo, violin, and harmonica-- but without the musically omnivorous bravado of their full-lengths. Honestly, it should not have worked, and in some cases it didn't: "Yardsale" managed to be both maudlin and overconceptual, and "Find My Love" featured some pretty ridiculous falsetto. But "When I Drink" worried over mortality like a hangnail and "Backwards With Time" made earnestness sound like righteous dissent. It's odd to have a sequel, even odder that The Second Gleam improves so thoroughly on the original, marking the band's considerable musical growth over just a few short years. These six songs align along their two favorite themes-- death and memory-- and thread together stray thoughts, good and painful memories, whimsical what-ifs into what sound like internal monologues. The new EP is eloquent but not showy, reflective but not self-absorbed, tender but not saccharine. Awwww…with love I give you Gleam 2 by the Avett Brothers.

As a note, The Gleam EPs are interesting asides to the Avetts' discography, but because they only show one facet of this multifaceted group, they sound experimental, incomplete, secondary, even despite the new EP's sturdiness. For this reason alone it seems strange that The Second Gleam will be their final release for Ramseur Records, the North Carolina indie that shepherded them to larger venues and greater sales. The Avetts have signed with American Recordings and are currently working with Rick Rubin. Let's hope he doesn't pull a Neil Diamond on them and polish away their rough edges, which have taken them a long way so far.

Last night was one of the best shows I've been to this year!

I totally dig is homemade bred-out-of-loneliness technique of flat picking, molding the classic sounds of Doc Watson and Lester Flatt, formulating a bluegrass nightmare that you just do not want to end. If you have not checked him out live, then do. Like real quick like.

He's a great guy too. I loved waiting him hang out at the bar before he went on and then hanging out with the crawled after. Simply, a great and wonderful guy.

The Felice Brothers are now in my top 5 list of great bands of all-time. Man, they are awesomeness...they put the ness in awesomeness.

Who are they you ask???

They are a Folk Rock / Country Rock band from upstate New York founded in 2006. It is comprised of the five main members Ian, Simone, James Felice, their friends Christmas, previously a traveling dice player, and Gregory, who is considered a young Sinatra. The three brothers are from the Catskill Mountains of New York. They hail from Palenville, NY, twenty minutes from Woodstock, NY. Ian is the main vocalist and plays the guitar and piano. James contributes vocals and plays the accordion, organ, piano, and fiddle. Simone is the drummer as well as a vocalist and a guitarist. Christmas plays the bass guitar.

Ray LaMontagne was born in New Hampshire, but as he put it, his family was "just passing through." His parents split up shortly after his birth, and his mother began a pattern of moving her six children wherever she could find employment and housing, which meant LaMontagne grew up as the perennial new kid in school (when and if he went to school at all). He did graduate high school, however, and found himself working in a shoe factory in Maine when he heard Stephen Stills' "Tree Top Flyer" on the radio. The song amounted to an epiphany for LaMontagne, and he made up his mind on the spot to become a singer and musician. By the summer of 1999 he had put together a ten-song demo tape of his songs, and that demo found its way into the hands of Jamie Ceretta at Chrysalis Music Publishing. The publishing house signed the young songwriter and teamed him with producer Ethan Johns in the studio, resulting in LaMontagne's debut album, Trouble, which was picked up by RCA Records and released in the fall of 2004. With a voice that sounds at times like a huskier, sandpaper version of Van Morrison or Tim Buckley and a tight, emotional writing style, LaMontagne impressed critics with such songs as the title tune, "Trouble," and the cinematic style of pieces like "Narrow Escape." The moment she picked up her father's 1958 Harmony tenor guitar, Aerin Tedesco started writing songs . . . and she hasn't stopped since.

Her songwriting came of age at Bard College in the Hudson Valley, where she studied literature and creative writing and began building a following at coffeehouses and colleges in the region.

After graduating, Aerin returned to her hometown Buffalo, where she performed at well-loved local venues such as Nietzsche's and the Calumet Arts Café, and collaborated with talented artists such as rock diva Alison Pipitone, guitar legend Michael Meldrum, and songstress Kathy Moriarty. She also established her own independent record label, Egasage Records (named after her two tenor guitars, Egas and Sage). Aerin's work in Buffalo earned her an appearance on the television program AM Buffalo, an invitation to read her songs at the public library poetry series, and nominations for an Artvoice Music Award and Buffalo Music Award.

From her home base Aerin began to travel across the Northeast and Midwest, performing at clubs, coffeehouses, colleges, and festivals (including the North by Northeast Festival, Great Blue Heron Festival, Lilith Fair Festival, and National Women's Music Festival). Concert reviewers delighted in her spunky onstage presence, expressive songwriting, captivating voice, and trademark tenor guitar.

When Aerin released her fourth album, Angels and Allegories, it appeared in ICE Magazine's Indie Five for December 1999. It was also eagerly awaited by an international mailing list of fans who had discovered Aerin not only at her live performances, but also on disc at local record stores like New World Record in Buffalo, NY and Side One Music in Richmond, IN; or on radio programs like WBFO's Folk Music Show in Buffalo, NY and WPKN's Amazon Radio in New Haven, CT; or in print in publications like Dirty Linen; or on the Web at sites like MP3.com.

Aerin moved to Chicago in the Spring of 2000. She has been playing at local venues, such as Uncommon Ground, the Heartland Caf'e9, and the Old Town School of Folk Music. Encouraged by the success of Angels, Aerin recently completed her fifth CD entitled Birthmark, which she released on September 18, 2003. He was also a regular on the NBC TV series Ed (2000–2004), playing socially maladjusted high-school student Warren Cheswick. "I want to be really clear about this. I've gotten emails from soldiers who dig it, but I want to make it totally explicit what the song means.The first verse is about guilt. That I can go about my daily life without thinking of the violence and the fear in Iraq, and the sacrifice people are making over there.The first part of the second verse is about frustration with political pissing matches, instead of unity among our elected representatives to serve these guys. The second half is about how the war haunts me; how I see dudes in uniform in airports and wonder what's going on in their heads, what they've witnessed.The bridge is about lost innocence. Young guys that go over there and come back scarred--bodily, often, but also psychologically, that so many of them will have the burden of post-traumatic stress disorder, nightmares, haunting images.I wrote the song basically out of two experiences; I went to Walter Reed last year, met some guys who had lost limbs, and came out scared and grateful. Man, what a year.

For some, the 30s are when you click through the imaginary list of things to be done. Honestly, I have done so much already. Life just gets better and better. I think I'm actually living the best years NOW in my 30s. My career. My love life. My social life. The community I live in. My financial status as well. I'm very secure and very grounded in every sense of the word. When I look back at my 20's I think of good times, bad times and so many life events. All just stepping stones that got me here. Some say with age that a purpose comes clear. Could be??

I'm really looking forward to my 33 birthday. Sharing it with my (old and new) friends and the ones I love. I'm very thankful that Hurricane Mills Revival (Shawn Martin and Chip Nietfeld) and Duncan May & the Resonators are going to play live at The Rutledge. It's going to be an awesome night.

Though they’ve had eight years to refine their sound and vision, Murder By Death rolled out of the gates fully realized in 2000, playing a blend of rocking Americana noir and dramatic post-punk that erased old style and audience boundaries as much as it tested the limits of new ones. And with their fourth album and Vagrant debut, Red Of Tooth And Claw (3/4/08), the Bloomington, Indiana, quartet are emerging as true artists in the zero-boundary sense: cinematic storytellers whose albums come together in an essential whole, and players whose jaw-dropping performances on record make you yearn for the chance to experience their energy up close and in person.
As much as the band’s previous full-lengths—2002’s Like The Exorcist, But More Breakdancing; 2003’s Who Will Survive, And What Will Be Left Of Them?; and 2006’s In Bocca Al Lupo—document this evolution, Red Of Tooth And Claw finds Murder By Death at the height of their powers. Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Trina Shoemaker (Queens Of The Stone Age, Emmylou Harris, Iggy Pop) at Dark Horse studios in Tennessee, the album captures the drama and nuance of MBD’s sound without compromising a lick of the band’s energy. And as longtime followers of their narrative grit—equal parts Old West drama and Old Testament justice—will be glad to know, MBD’s subject matter also hasn’t softened for album No. 4. Rife with lust, betrayal, and classical archetypes of good and evil, Red Of Tooth And Claw is, as singer/guitarist Adam Turla puts it, a “Homer’s Odyssey of revenge, only without the honorable character at the center.”

That notion of an epic quest rings apparent from the first notes of Red Of Tooth And Claw. Equally indebted to Eric Burdon and Johnny Cash (Turla’s vocals have never sounded so ominously haunted and low), “I’m Comin’ Home” sets the album’s tone with a shuffle and a snarl. Bassist Matt Armstrong and new drummer Dagan Thogerson drive the songs with equal parts understatement and brute force, and cellist Sarah Balliet, whose vocabulary spans from Kentucky bluegrass to Western classical, guides and slashes through the songs with colors both in and outside the lines of traditional Americana.

The pace may change—see the Ennio Morricone-inspired instrumental “Theme” or the huge, swinging confrontational lament “Black Spot”—but there’s a sense of forward momentum throughout Red Of Tooth And Claw that drives home the idea of moving inevitably closer to… something. “With In Bocca Al Lupo, we were getting inspiration from a basic idea—sin, in the Dante/Divine Comedy sense—and doing 12 songs that were very unique and about different people. But as a whole, it’s just an anthology of songs,” says Turla. “With this one, we got the story developed and realized that we wanted to stay moving in that direction throughout the record. The album is kind of frantic at times, and intentionally so: If it’s an album about travel, let’s actually make it sound like travel.”

Murder By Death’s own travels—the band have shared stages with artists as musically and geographically far-flung as Against Me!, Rev. Horton Heat, the Pogues, Clutch and Flogging Molly—have seasoned the band as performers, but the m.o. for their music has existed since day one. It’ll come as no surprise to anyone who’s pored over MBD’s lyrics that between them, Turla and cellist Sarah Balliet have degrees in religious studies and anthropology; however, beyond the band members’ book-smarts lies a shared love not only of American roots music, but of the gut-level emotion at that music’s core. It’s one thing to be a rock band that writes concept albums, but MBD is not drawn to the sort of clinical, pretentious trappings usually associated with that idea. As Turla explains, “The real energy in our songs comes from stuff like the sexual tension, the murder, the drinking and basically any other dirt you find between the lines.”

Well, the fight to reopen 12th & Porter has hit a new but foreseen obstacle. The fire marshall informed me today that I would not be able to open the doors of 12th & Porter without first installing fire sprinklers (something the I agree with them on for your safety). Until today, I was operating under misinformation about when the sprinkling needed to be completed. I have hired a company to install the sprinklers and should be back on track soon. Getting the doors open as soon and as safely as possible are are goals. Thanks for hanging in there."
